Cast fake LEG IIII

There have recently been a couple of very similar LEG IIII FL antoniniani of Carausius that show a marked similarity to a known cast fake (top image) of the type. Although the flan shapes are different the missing parts of the legend are the same on all three, plus other obvious blemishes.

There were distinctive small casting seam remnants on the top coin. Although well made it was a certain cast fake and the remaining two coins are seriously doubtful.

Two further examples have come to light since this page was created, reproduced below. Again, minor variations in flan detail but the characteristic signs are still there.

Looking back through an old UK dealer's list I've come across another example. This one dates back to the year 2000, spring, and therefore is at least five years before I was offered an example I could examine in hand to observe the edge casting seam remnants.

The piece below was offered in a Spink auction, late January 2023. It didn't sell, possibly due to being withdrawn. It looks to match the first coin I identified in terms of the nibbles into the flan shape. The characteristic faults are still evident.

There has just been another example (below) surface in CNG e574 of the Lyne collection, withdrawn from the auction. Again, the flan shape has been altered, but the defect on the lion hind quarters and the other reproduced cast features betray it.
