The wolf and twins of Rome appear early on in the order of coins of Carausius, both as the silver Laureate and the radiate billon series. The mintmark is usually RSR or some variant or corruption thereof and accompanied by the legend ROMANA RENOVA or RENOVA ROMANA.
In 2014 a new type was recorded by the British Museum that paired the wolf and twins reverse with the legend ROMA MILITV[M] paired with the RSR mark in the exergue. Whether this was a deliberate legend and type pairing are a die cutters aberration we will never know.
This unique coin was offered for sale in London Coins auction 144, 1-2March 2014, Lot 1047 with an estimate of £750-£1250. The piece was finally sold for £1600.
